Lisa Binkley
In the Boro Spirit
Boro, kantha, Gee’s Bend quilts – each evokes images of old, worn fabrics, simply stitched for new use from thread and salvaged cloth. Born of necessity in diverse cultures, contemporary fiber artists can learn much from these textiles technically and aesthetically. In this meditative workshop we look to these functional cloth creations for inspiration in developing new works of fiber art. Beginning with old fabrics – vintage linens, worn jeans, blankets, tattered garments – we curate, layer, alter, and hand stitch them into new life. Explorations include non-traditional hand piecing and applique, hand quilting with heavier threads, and a variety of design considerations.

Creativity & Complex Curves
Learning to add complex curves to your quilt designs is like being given the keys to the universe. In this workshop, you start by making a curvy-pieced quadrant quilt of your own design. You translate simple doodles into block designs and transfer your linework to freezer paper for making patterns. You then proceed to make a fabric version of your drawing. For your second project, you move to a larger-sized composition with more complex curves. Patricia guides you with her step-by-step instructions and constructive encouragement. By the end of the workshop, you’ll be confident adding curves to your future projects.
